Hubby and I ditched the kids with the babysitter last week and hit the cinemas to see Deadpool 2 and BOOM CHAKA KHAN, it hit the Deadpool spot.....but I am getting ahead of myself and should definitely preface this by saying I love Deadpool and have the serious warm and fuzzies for Ryan Reynolds.
A sequel is always nerve-wracking though, isn't it - will it stand up to the first installment or will it totally tank to the bottom of the ocean alongside Jack and the Titanic. I had everything crossed that Deadpool 2 delivered the same gruesome, comedic genius, action packed adventure as its predecessor. Especially since I was paying good babysitting money for this night out!
The opening scenes did not disappoint, there was blood, limbs flying, Ryan Reynolds ad-libbing ....until Vanessa is killed on their anniversary and only minutes after deciding to start a family (SPOILER ALERT - oh sorry, too late!) I was left devastated as was poor Wade. I was also a little crushed that Morena Baccarin was out of it so fricking early as she was amazing with RR in DP1 - but no need to panic she is peppered through the movie, PHEW!
After hitting rock bottom, Wade, not wanting to be outdone by Wolverine and/or Hugh Jackman (in case you don't know, Wolverine dies in the latest Wolverine movie) had a crack at blowing himself up, except Colossus puts him back together at the X-Men mansion. However, not before he catches a glimpse of Vanessa and she tells him that "his heart isn't in the right place" to be able to join her.
Isn't Colossus just the most caring, supportive, loving, sweetest tonne of organic steel you ever did see on the screen, it seems he will stop at nothing to make Deadpool a better human being - good luck buddy. And while we're at the mansion what a great opportunity to sneak in some famous faces from previous X-Men movies. I did miss Stan Lee in this one though.
Also a great opportunity to introduce Yokio, Negasonic Teenage Warhead's girlfriend - total kudos to Marvel for depicting an openly LGBTQ relationship. Totally hilarious that Deadpool and Yukio are just so cutesy with each other too, given the open hostility that continues between him and NTW.
Enter stage left, orphan Russell (aka Firefist) played by young Kiwi actor Julian Dennison (no doubt we'll be calling him Australian before long) is causing a raucous at the "Mutant Reeducation Centre" that he so unhappily calls home, so the X-Men are en-route to lend a hand. While I like Julian Dennison he didn't steal the show for me in this movie - it must be hard to play opposite Ryan Reynolds in this role though.
During the standoff, Deadpool figures out that little Russell is being abused by the headmaster and kills one of the white-coated individuals standing around (gasp! and I would have totally done the same thing if I was Deadpool)....queue Russell and Wade being arrested and sent to some place called the IceBox (aka naughty mutant jail) wearing neck collars that suppress their superpowers.
Enter stage right, a cybernetic soldier from the future, Cable played by Josh Brolin (I love Josh Brolin and have ever since I saw him in The Goonies). Cable is after Russell, even though you could be forgiven for thinking he was after Deadpool cause why would he be after a chubby little kid from New Zealand....oh hang on - because in the future he killed Cables wife and child, BOOM, that is the reason he has travelled back in time and psst, he only has one trip left on his time-travel device!
During a fight with Cable, Wade escapes the IceBox, has another near death experience, visits with Vanessa again and is convinced he needs to help Russell. Off he goes with Dopinder and Weasel (so glad they are back in DP2) to organise a group of misfits (no other word for them) called X-Force to rescue Russell. These are a star-studded bunch of misfits though, Brad Pitt, Terry Crews, Lewis Tan, Bill Skarsgard and Rob Delaney as Peter.
Also back in DP2 is Leslie Uggams playing Blind Al - this woman is amazing and a total gem in Deadpool. Her wise-cracks and quick wit sit Deadpool on his arse on more than one occasion and I lover her for it. She is also extremely fortunate to be blind when Deadpool is growing back his legs and giving everyone else, including the audience a complete peep show.
During the montage of recruitment for X-Force, we see that Russell has made friends with the biggest mutant in the IceBox, Juggernaut. Poor Russell thinks that Deadpool has given up on him.
X-Force attempt to rescue Russell. It doesn't go well. The only one left alive is Domino, whose superpower is luck. Yep, she is the luckiest chick walking this earth because she is in a movie with Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin.
Have to admit this part had me a little, eh - why bring them together to just kill them all? I couldn't see the point, except it was more blood and limbs flying around and getting chopped off - totally Deadpool. Perhaps this was a great introduction to Domino and her luckiness.
The movie hits the climax at the "Mutant Reeducation Centre" where Russell, Juggernaut, Deadpool, Cable, Dominio and some X-Men etc etc all converge - Russell and Juggernaut are there to kill the headmaster, Deadpool to stop Russell killing the headmaster and Cable to kill Russell to stop him becoming a future flame thrower.
Will Deadpool make it? Won't he? Will Russell die? Will Deadpool die? Will anyone be able to stop Juggernaut? Will Cable make it back to his family?
Well....Deadpool stops Russell by wearing the daft superpower suppressing neck collar and taking a bullet for him. Russell does not become a flame throwing killer. Cable's family are now very much alive. Deadpool talks and talks. Deadpool dies. Cable uses his time-travelling device to go back in time to skillfully avert Deadpool dying. Deadpool survives. Cable is stuck in the future (Nawww and YAY cause Josh Brolin and Ryan Reynolds could very likely be back in a sequel).
Roll the end credits. Yukio and NTW (Can we please just call her that for short!) fix the time-travelling device. What could possibly go wrong? Well... Vanessa is saved. Peter is saved. X-Men Origins: Wolverine's version of Deadpool is killed. Ryan Reynolds is killed before taking on the role of Green Lantern.
